About Us

 Dawanggang 大忘杠
大Da: big; 忘 Wang: forget; 杠 Gang: wood pole

Dawanggang is a musical ensemble created by Song Yuzhe, an eclectic musician from the North East of China. While the name Dawanggang has no other meaning than what you see above, the content of the music reaches far and broad, from nomadic themes of Western China to broad experimental lines, touching on folk tales and giving a big sense of space. The band is of flexible composition and wants to bring together musicians from all sorts of musical, cultural, ethnical backgrounds so as to reach beyond differences and create new musical dimensions. Critics have described this music as a 'sound-scape'

In 2013, Dawanggang has signed up with the German label JARO.
The first CD released in Europe is a Selection from the trilogy HUANG QIANG ZOU BAN (Wild Tune Stray Rhythm- an expression coming from Chinese Opera and describing music slghtly out of tune or rhythm). The trilogy includes:Three Dakinis are discussing; Ashik Castle; Liberate No Man's Land.

<wild tune stray rhythm> released by Jaro

The Chinese music, the way you know it, ranges from the traditional instruments accompanied by high-pitched vocals to the imitation of western rock culture. In contrast, by blending ancient China, central Asia, religious music, experimental songs and contemporary rock, DaWangGang reaches a perfect equilibrium between wild and spiritual.

DaWangGang is a music and performance group created by Song Yuzhe, an eclectic and self-taught musician from North-East China. For a period stretching over almost ten years, Song Yuzhe spent time traveling in remote parts of China, learning from musicians of different ethnic origins and a wide array of social backgrounds. His experience was transfered in this marvelous five piece band.

2013 brings the debut album of DaWangGang called ‘Huang qiang zou ban’ or ‘Wild Tune Stray Rhythm’.
